MANGONUI-WHANGAROA ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY

Annual Meeting Held At the annual meeting of the Mangonui - Whangaroa Acclimatisation Society for the year ended March 31st, the following officers were reelected:— President. Mr. John O’Sullivan; vice-president, Mr. E. Buckley; members of council (three retire annually of a council of 12), Messrs. H. Barrett, J. Frew and P. R. Francis; auditor, Mr. W. H. Atkins; delegates to Northland Federation, Messrs. J. O’Sullivan, W. A. Wilton, W. R. Craig and L. O. Gallagher. The meeting expressed its appreciation and full approval of the council’s report for the year, and in particular the action taken in asking for a close season for 1942, in conjunction with other societies in the Northland Federation, and also fully agreed with the subsequent action of the War Cabinet in closing the season for all game throughout the Dominion, as it was readily realised that all ammunition available should be conserved for defence, if needed. The thanks of the society were accorded to Mr. H. W. Mclntosh for voluntary ranging done and to Colonel Whitney for the gift of mallard duck eggs. Thanks were also conveyed to all those persons who had attended to the rearing of the duck. In response to inquiries, the following figures, for the season 1940-41, were given of the distribution of pheasants purchased for liberation in the Mangonui and Whangaroa districts: Te Hapua 6, Waihopo 8, Houhora 4, Motutangi 8, Waiharara 6, Kauri Flat 12, Waipapakauri 4, Awanui Flats 24, Quarry Road 6, Awauui-Kaitaia 12, Swamp (small farms) 12, Wireless Road 6, Pukepoto 12, Ahipara 12, Church Road 24, Double Crossing 10, Clough’s Road 6, Snelgar’s Road 8, Larmer’s Road 12, Fryer’s Road 12, Ruaroa Road 6 Te Rore Road 12, Kaingaroa 12, Lake Ohio 12, Diggers’ Valley 12, Takahue 12, H. Jones’ 6, Hukatere 20, above Hukatere 6, Herekino 20, Fairburn 11, Awaroa 4, Fisher’s Road 6, Kumi Road 5, Oruaiti, Mangonui and Back River 26, Kohumaru 8, Oruru and Peria 34. Te Koroa 12, Victoria Valley 26, Paranui 12, Taipa 4, Ahipara to Waipapakauri (beach) 40, Waipapakauri to Waahi (beach) 20. For the season 1941-42 the number of pheasants purchased was 365, which were liberated in the foregoing localities on a pr# rata basis. The balance-sheet and annual report were adopted.
