Mangonui County Roads and Roadwork

Engineer Submits Report to the County Council The county engineer, Mr. R. R. ! Tonic, reported on the roads and roniwork in the county to the Mangonui County Council at its me e>. i n, r last Wednesday, as follows : Since the last meeting of the Council I have forwarded proposals for main highway maintenance and construction for the current year, and Public Works estimates have now been submitted. General maintenance work is being carried out on main highways by graders. Good progress is being made with the stone work and filling of approaches to the Mangonui wharf. Difficulty was experienced in getting sound stone for the facing of the stone wall, but the stone now being obtained from the roadside near Mort’s bridge is very good. The office on the wharf has now been lined and office fittings are being put in. The Caterpillar 10 grader is now at work again after a complete overhaul. Spain’s road has been scarified where potholed, and graded ; Unahi road is being shaped up. The Caterpillar 15 grader has completed the grading of Church road and Fisher’s road in conjunction with relief workers, and next week will make a start on Duncan’s road. Some 300 yards of metal from the Kaingaroa quarry has been put on Mangatete load, patching potholes from Kaingaroa to Champion’s road. Metalling of Larmer’s road is nearing completion and will provide metalled access to all settlers on this road. The construction of Slaughterhouse bridge is well in hand and all piles have been constructed. ☆ ☆ ☆ The engineer also submitted a report on the Kenana-Paraonui road. The existing road was, he considered, of little value as far as access to the settlers was concerned and the Gov-

ernment grant appearing on the estimates for the road should be transferred. He considered a route down the Oruaiti river to meet the main Mangonui-Kaeo road at Oruaiti as far more suitable.
