NOTES ON THE PLAY Kaitaia ; Ist Innings.—Renton and Watkins opened the batting for Kaitaia, facing the bowling of Harrson and Souter. The batsmen were both uneasy against Harrison and they both treated Souter with respect. Watkins was early caught at point by Bowman, Buster holding an easy catch. Renton soon followed, being ibw to L. Bourke. The only batsmen to make a stand in the first innings were Davis and Harris. Ted Harris piled up 16 in good style with drives to leg, and was just striking form w-hen, in playing back to a ball he hit his wicket. “Chum” Davis was not in long, but hit three nice fours before the bowlers got used to his mul-ti-coloured cap. The first six of the game came from Taylor with a nice drive to the on.

2nd Innings. Renton and Stone opened for Kaitaia this time, Renton was evidently not up to his usual form and was early dismissed, being caught by Bowman at point. Buster is rapidly learning to hold on to things. Stone dug himself in and went on to

23 before being dismissed by L. Bourke after a useful innings. The rot then set in, Watkins, Harris, McIntosh and Davis only making 10 between them. Ted Kingdon, the skipper, then came to light and stayed until he reached 10, being bowled by Souter. Stanton went out full of vim and showed that the old-timers can still be relied upon, especially when he ran a five then looked anxiously toward the bottles of lunch. Dunn, another old-timer, made a good partnership with Stanton, Dunn making 14 before being dismissed by Buckland. Taylor then joined Stanton, and this pair certainly made the tail wag, Taylor hitting another 6 and putting the ball rifeht out of the ground. Taylor was dismissed by a good length ball by Buckland, and Stanton was not out with top score of 26. L. Bourke, Buckland and Souter bowled well for Herekino, L. Bourke having a good average. Herekino ; Ist Innings.—Herekino opened in both innings with Buckland and Reid. Buckland is a good allrounder, and some of his shots were pretty to watch. He made 16 and was clean bowled by Watkins. Herekino then followed Kaitaia’s performance, losing wickets cheaply, Watkins and Mclntosh, Kaitaia’s stock bowlers being dangerous. 2nd Innings.—Buckland again showhis form, but could not get past 16. Reid may be likened to the Rock of Gibraltar. He stone-walled right through the innings and the bowling held no terrors for him. He has the patience of Job, and his score of 20 was well earned. This lad, he is little more, should make a really fine bat with tuition. L. Bourke came to light with 16, and Bob Harrison and Jack Souter made 10 each just to show there was no ill-feeling. Watkins was by far the best bowler on the field, and is possibly the best in the county this season. Mclntosh, a newcomer, is also a first class bowler, and with practice on our pitches will be hard to play. Ted Kingdon showed his ability in placing his field, it was by far the best-skippered game Kaitaia has playto date. Kaitaia badly need an opening pair. On Sunday's play, Stone and Mclntosh seem the ones, they had more patience and were most unselfish. Herekino are is a good team needing more net* practice. The umpires did all that was expected of them, even on one or two instances giving 9 or 10 balls in an over, and of course 7 to make up for the overs, in the overs. Being Irish, Laurie will understand that.

AWANUI AND PERIA Playing at Awanui last Sunday, the Peria Cricket team secured a win against Awanui. In their one innings Peria put on more runs than did Awanui in their two appearances at the wickets. Following are the details : Awanui ; Ist Innings Vazey, b Martin 0 E. Smith, b Harrison 4 H.
