FARM COSTING AND ACCOUNTANCY
Sir. —As a newcomer to this district, may I suggest an innovation in farm methods which, in my opinion, would be invaluable to dairy farmers. In a business today, fierce competition makes it essential to have an accurate costing system. In farming today the system does not exist. If a capable faun cost accountant were established in Kaitaia to act in an advisory capacity to farmers, I feel sure that all concerned would benefit greatly. Farmers would become members of an Association and would pay subscriptions for six months in proportion to their butterfat returns. It could be called the Mangonui Farm Accounting Association. Members would meet the farm-cost accountant, discuss their financial problems with him, and under his directions open up a sample set of books. The members would then visit the cost-accountant say once a fortnight, for progress checks on their books and for advice. At the end of six months when they had attained a degree of proficiency in keeping their books they would be released from the Association and from paying further subscriptions. The aggregate of subscriptions would perhaps offer sufficient inducement to some enterprising accountant to set up a practice in Kaitaia and Kaitaia undoubtedly needs a local public accountant. In my opinion the above system would do much to clarify the individual farmer’s financial position and would assist him to acquire a more scientific use of money. Yours, etc., “OBSERVER” Sale of Property.—At the Kaitaia stock sale on Tuesday, Grigg’s Buildings, at the Awanui road corner in Kaitaia, were offered for sale and were purchased at a reasonable figure for an unnamed buyer.
