Women’s Institutes

PUKEPOTO NATIVE INSTITUTE REVIVED The Pukepoto Na'tive Women’s Institute was recently revived by Mrs. L. Horn of the Dominion Federation of Women’s Institutes, who is visiting the district in connection with Native health matters. The following officers were elected : President —Mrs. Son- j nie Peters ; Vice-President —Mrs. J. j Norman ; Secretary and Treasurer — j Mrs. T. Robson. ORURU-PERIA INSTITUTE The Oruru-Peria Women’s Institute held its usual monthly meeting on October 6 when it also celebrated its sixth birthday. Mrs. Barriball presided over a good attendance of members and visitors. The meeting opened with the Institute song. Mrs. Barriball welcomed Mrs. Horn, Northern Maori organiser, also Miss Merlet, District Nurse. Mrs. Horn addressed the meeting and demonstrated wood fibre flower making. The competitions were : Seniors : Nightgown—Mrs. Forsyth 1, Mrs. Walmsley 2 ; Cream Puffs—Mrs. Forsyth 1, Mrs. Walmsley 2. Junior’s: Nightgown Miss M. Simmonds 1, Miss C. RAWENE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE The October meeting of the Rawene Women’s Institute was held as usual in the County Hall on Monday evening. Mrs. Curry presided over a fair attendance of members. The Roll Call, “Where I was born and the country I would most like to visit,” was very interesting. For the sponge sandwich Mrs. Tom Millar was first and Mrs. R. Stewart second, and Mrs. Loftus won the paper tearing. A demonstration on wreath making was kindly given by Miss Speight, who also told the members how to go about making bouquets and posies.

This was much appreciated by all. Supper was served by the hostess, Mrs. Loftus, and a delightful evening came to a close. DONATION TO HOKIANGA HOSPITAL Money Raised by Native Women’s Institute The Natives of Waima have several times shown their appreciation of the services rendered to the Native community by the Hokianga County Hospital by making contributions to its funds, and at the Hospital Board’s meeting last Monday evening a deputation from the Waima Women’s Institute waited on the Board and handed over a further sum of £l6 13s 6d that had been collected for the Institution’s funds. The deputation was introduced by Mr. Kelly. Mrs. Johnstone voiced the interest taken in the Waima settlement in hospital affairs, and requested a list of the names of those Natives whose hospital accounts were still outstanding as arrangements were underway for another effort before Christmas in aid of the hospital fund. Mrs. Pehi in handing over the donation said it was given in order to show the Natives’ appreciation of the services rendered by the hospital, and regretted the sum was not larger. The Chairman, Mr. W. H. White, thanked the deputation for the interest displayed, especially at the present time, and agreed to have the list supplied in order to enable them to allocate amounts out of their do-
