Wet Weather Mars Progress in Whangaroa

Roads Becoming Pot-Holed Opening of Culverts and WaterTables The following report was submitted by the engineer, Mr. H. Chappell, at Monday’s meeting of the Whangaroa County Council : Main Highways. Top-dressing with Waitaruke shale on a portion of the Kahoe-Stoney Creek main highway is practically completed. The past three weeks of wet weather has held up the progress on this and other works throughout the county. Through the continual wet weather, road surfaces' are becoming badly potholed and as soon as the weather clears, it is intended to patch the worst portions with river shingle, before grading. Where -necessary, attention has been given the opening of water-tables and culverts. Near the pound, the rubbish and small w-illows have been cleared to give better visibility. Posts painted white have been put in at several points to indicate narrow and dangerous parts of the main highway between Whitehead’s bridge and Pahuhu. County Roads.—As mentioned m this report, the wet weather has held up the carrying out of important maintenance work on county roads. Water-tables and culverts have, wherever necessary, been kept open. Your attention is drawn to the condition of the Mangaite lane, the portion of road referred to is that which is floodwashed. Temporary repairs will be made by grading the loose metal in, but trouble will be experienced again after the next flooding. Grading has been carried out on the Taratara and Otangaroa Roads. Rood Grants.—The contractors have practically completed the construction work on Nimmo’s, Fleming’s, and Sherman’s roads. The metalling of Foster’s access road has been completed.
