Motor Traffic and School Children

Owing to drivers of motor vehicles not complying with the regulations requiring such traffic to slow down to 15 miles an hour when passing a school, the Kaitaia D.H. School committee is to request the traffic inspectors to see that this regulation is observed by motorists. The regulation preventing motor vehicles from passing a school bus w’hile it has stopped to take on or set down children, is generally not observed in the district and the committee is to request its enforcement. Activities of Kaitaia Beautifying Society The Kaitaia Beautifying Society have forwarded orders for over 6000 plants and bulbs for planting this autumn in the reserves in Kaitaia. The section opposite the Council Chambers is to be replanted and the plot prepared by the billiard saloon is also to have its quota of flowers. This week the section between the post office and Cammish’s shop has been prepared in readiness for planting, while further sections will be planted as they become available to the Society. Northern Maor»s Do Well In Ten ms Tournament At a large hui in the Northern Wairoa, where Maoris were present f-om all parts of the country, a ten nis tournament was held during the week when Maoris from this district did particularly well. The women’s singles championship cup was won by Miss Topia of Manukau who defeated Miss C. Wordley of Dargaville in a very exciting final. The men’s singles championship was keenly fought out, M. Howell of Takahue defeating J. Walters of Manukau in the final. Bing Pong Club Formed at Oruru A meeting was held in the Oruru hall on the evening of Monday, April 5, for the purpose of forming a ping pong club in Oruru. Mr. Hilford, who was in the chair, outlined the objects of the proposed club. After it had been decided by the meeting to form such a club, the following officers were elected: Prsident—Mr. Hilford; Secretary— Mr. A. Hancox; Club Captain—Mr. N. Barriball; Committee—Misses P. Barriball, M. Taylor and C. Mclnnes with officers.
