When the two teams went on to the field, popular opinion was that the visitors were in for a real clean up, judging from the particularly strong line of Whangape backs amongst whom were Tommy Bowman, Jim Robb, Bob Harrison, Edgar and Archie Dysart, all of whom have represented the Countv in the past. But it was evident that these players could not combine in the first half, the ball stopping with the inside backs, this fault being mainly Bowman's. The fast breaking Kaitaia pack , also frustrated any serious movements. In the second

half, however, the Whangape line played real football that was a joy to witness, and had they done the same in the first half, a cricket score would have been put up in their favour. Kaitaia kicked off against a strong wind and play came back to half way Each set of backs had a fair share of the ball from a number of set scrums but i o movements started, the inside backs either mishandling or being caught in possession. The three last season’s juniors in the visitors’ fifteen—Jameson, Flinn and Marsh—were at the top of their form and several of their team mates as well as the opposition could well have taken points from them. Marsh particularly impressed at fullback, his safe handling and kicking frequently drawing applause from the onlookers. Contrary to expectations, the ball seldom passed the Blues’ 25, and no points were registered by either side up till half time, although the Reds had two easy penalties in front of the visitors’posts, but Tatana had left his kicking boots home. From the resumption of play, Kaitaia went to the attack and carried all before them, but were pulled up at Whangape's line. A series of set scrums did not get them anywhere and they were gradually forced back. Kaitaia obtained their initial points from a beautiful kick from penalty by Moses Yates from just inside the lineoul and on the home team’s 25 line, and against a strong cross wind. Kaitaia 3 Whangape 0. Play again went back to the Whangape line where A. Dysart, their fullback, secured, ran through the opposition and lost possession, incidentally his pants, and a sure score. The Blue forwards who were up to then Kaituia’s attacking force, again broke through, and S. Gibb followed up a kick to heat the fullback for the ball, and score. Yates did not convert. Kaitaia 6 Whangape 0. From now on Kaitaia were the defenders. Assault after assault by Bowman and Co. kept Kaitaia’s thirteen (one man having been ordered off, and Jim Wright having retired hurt), on their line, but luck was with them all the way. A brilliant run by A. Dysart (fullback) from half way, through the Blue men, earned him a well merited score. The kick failed making the points Kaitaia 6 Whangape 3. In a back movement after the kick-off Bob Harrison went over under the posts, but a scrum down was ordered. Until the final whistle, Whangape was on top and the spectators on their toes, but there was no addition to the score. Mr. Ned Wilkinson had complete control over a fast game Results of the other matches played are as follows : Senior Ahipara defeated Rarawa 17—3. Paatu defaulted to Awanui. Junior Ahipara defeated Waiharara 11—3. Awanui defeated Rarawa 6—3. Kaitaia defeated Whangape 5—3. Victoria Valley drew with Paatu 3 all. Referees’ Association Meeting A very well attended meeting of the Mangonui Rugby Referees Association was held in Kaitaia on Saturday, Mr. G. Foster, the President, occupying the chair. With the view of obtaining a uniformity of decisions on the field various points in the rules of rugby were discussed. It 'is hoped to hold regular meetings of referees during the season. Recommendation in regard to prompt time for the starling of matches and other matters were passed to be submitted to the Union.
