The County Jubilee Show

Favoured with splendid weather conditions the County A. and P. Association held their Jubilee Show at Kaitaia last Saturday. An increase in gate receipts, £lls as against £lOl for last year, was realised, this being largely due perhaps to the Women’s Institute competition in connection with the show. The entries in the majority of sections were also above those of last year, notably in the Friesian and Jersey sections, hut the Shorthorn, fat stock, and sheep sections did not show much competition. In the inside exhibits, in all sections, there was good competition, the only exception being in the schools’, where the entries were disappointing, Kaitaia being the only school that exhibited to any extent. A feature of the show this year was the Women’s Institute section, in this 11 Institutes, five European, Oruru-Peria, Mangonui, Fairburn, Takahue and Awanui, and six Native, Peria, Pamapuria, Maimaru, Ahipara, Whangape, and Pukepoto, competed, and the showing in the Parish hall was of a particularly high standard, the thrift articles being worthy of very high praise. This section, which was a show in itself, was deservedly well patronised during the day, and those who, for the first time, saw displayed the work of members of the Institutes, were struck with the variety of useful articles that had been made from flour bags, sugar bags, wool, rubber tyres, and other articles which are usually cast aside. The officials of the Northland Federation of Institutes, who organised this section, and Miss Smedley, who had charge of the Native Institute side, are to be complimented on the manner in which they carried out their work. Mention must also be made of the fact that this section was ready for judging on Friday evening, the judges commencing their task at 8.15 on Saturday morning. This could not be said of the main hall, as these sections were not ready till late in the morning and the doors were not open to the public till about 2 o’clock in the afternoon, a state of affairs that at future shows should be rectified. If the Institute members can have their section, which includes cooking as well as practically all the other classes in the main hall, ready early on Saturday morning for judging, then there is no reason why the main hall should not be ready, the judging completed, and the public admitted before lunch. In the main hall the inside exhibits were, as usual at the county show, of a very high standard of excellence and called for much favourable comment. In the school section, although the

of work was high One striking exhibit for which there was no class, was an oil painting by a school girl of 11 years, this * exhibit being outstanding. Speaking of the Friesian cattle shown Mr. N. R. Roper, assistant secretary of the N.Z Friesian Association, who was present, said thac the entries were more numerous, and of a higher standard, than at any other show north of Heleusville. During the last few years there had been a big improvement in not only the quantity but also the quality of the Friesiaus in this district, as there was a large area of good Friesian country in the county and this was reflected in the show. The champion animals were of a good standard but care had not been taken to bring the stock to show condition. These animals were from some of the best blood in the Dominion. The appearance of the stock led one to suggest that lime was lacking in most of the country round Kaitaia. The entries in the Jersey section were splendid and in the majority of cases care had been taken to bring these animals to the show in good condition. The quantity and quality of the Jerseys compared more than favourably with any show north of Auckland, of taken from working dairy farmers as against the exhibits of stud farms. The horses shown, although still below the standard that should he attained were better and more numerous than last year, and the ring events were watched with interest. This section rather drags, and the judging was not completed till 5 o’clock, when most of the people had left for home. Owing to the lack of entries the chops and athletic events that were to he staged liad to be abandoned . A 8 at last show the Presbyterian ladies’ guild had charge of the refreshments and carried out their part of the organisation to the satisfaction of all. To the band of willing workers for the * County A. and P. Association is the credit due for the successful carrying out of the day’s organisation, and these members, headed by the president, Mr. J. T. Clark, and the secretary, Mr. W. H. Farrimond, are to he commended on the .results of the efforts.
