County Council

MONTHLY MEETING A meeting of the County Council was held on Wednesday when there were present Crs. W. Vickers (chairman), C. J. E. Barriball, J. N. Berghan, F. Holder, L. J. Matthews, W. J. Steed, H. H. Thompson and R. T. Wrathall. Roadworks The clerk was instructed to write to Mr. R. G. Brien in reference to damage being done to Church road by his stock. The engineer was instructed to proceed with the expenditure ot £l2 in giving approved road access to Pawa. In reply to a letter from the A.A. regarding the bad state of the Waipapakauri-West Coast road the Council decided to spend £SO on the road on condition that the A.A. contribute a similar amount. Permission was granted the Peria school committee to remove 100 cubic yards of earth from the Peria junction of the Victoria Valley-Fairburn road subject to the engineer’s appro- | val. The sum of £ls is to be spent j on Kumi road and a like amount on Quarry road, in effecting urgent repairs. The Puriri Timber company was granted permission to quarry metal on Riley’s road, provided metal was used on road. The offer of Mr. A. Holder to maintain Clough’s road for one year at a charge of £7 10/- was accepted. The water tables at Awanui are to be cleared. The grader is to be put on Larmer’s, Fryer’s and Wireless roads. Proposals for raising the road at Kawakawa corner on the main highway have been approved by the Highways Council and provided funds are available work may be put in hand during the summer months, also proposals for construction of a culvert at the Oruaiti creek and filling the depression north of the creek. The engineer was given authority to complete these proposals and also to seek authority to extend the work at Oruaiti so that the dip by the school would be raised. The Council is to apply to the P.W.D. for a special grant of £2lB on account of £4lB for Jameson’s road. The P.W.D. are to be asked to carry out work on Far Northern roads utilising the unemployed natives of that area. A letter was received from Mr. H. M. Rushworth enclosing a letter from Mr. Clem Jurlina, of Sweetwater, regarding the need for repairs to the Sweetwater road. Cr. Steed stated that the road was in a bad condition and £SOO to £6OO would be required to put it in order. A Government

grant was required as it was impossible to do this work out of county funds. Mr. Weiss, of Mangonui, wrote regarding repairs to his access road. The request was supported by Cr. Wrathall and it was decided to ask for a Government grant of £IOO for this road. Cr. Thompson stated that both Fisher’s and Snelgar’s roads needed maintaining, as did Duncan’s road. If available relief workers are

to be put on maintaining roads in the Mangonui township. The engineer was instructed to prepare an estimate for renewing the present wooden foreshore wall at Mangonui in permanent material, When the grader is at Oruaiti it is to grade Foster’s access road. The Paranui quarry is to be fenced. The clerk is to write to the Lands Department requesting that the balance of grant £25 be expended on access road to Blk 5 Mangonui. General The meetings of the Council were fixed for the third Wednesday in each month. Crs. Vickers, Berghan, Holder and Thompson were appointed a Finance Committee, which is to peruse accounts before the meetings.

An adjustment was effected with the county clerk regarding the amount of house rent charged and the difference was added to his salary. The returning officer’s salary was fixed at £lO 10/for the County Council and Hospital Board elections. The Finance Committee is to investigate the condition of the county house on Church road and report to next meeting.

A letter from Mr. E. I. Nilsson of Mangonui, regarding the proposed Mangonui wharf objecting to sucb a large structure being erected, was held over till the special meeting, when it is anticipated that further data regarding finances will be available* A letter was received from the Kauri Gum Products in reply to a letter from the Council granting permission for school children to pass through their property at Waiharara.

A special meeting of the Council is to be held on Tuesday June 4th to consider loan conversion and other matters. Cr. Wrathall was added to the Committee to revise the Mangonui wharf dues in place of Cr. Garton.

Cr. Wrathall tabled the following notice of motion—“ That at the next meeting the Council consider the administrative costs of the county with a view to endeavouring to reduce the overhead costs and in particular to bring about co-ordination between the clerical and engineering departments. Deputations to Council Messrs Meenan Bros, waited on the Council in reference to broken culverts on the KaingaroaDuncan road. The repairs had been effected that day. Mr. Tony Vinac asked that the Pekerau road be repaired in order to get cream to the factory. The engineer is to look into this matter. Mr. P. Thode waited on the Council with the request that the road at Waipapakauri be maintained. The matter was left with the engineer and riding member to see what could be done. Mr. P. Sulenta waited on the Council in reference to having improvements effected to the Waipapakauri school-Port road in order that his firm may start operations in burning shell for lime for the northland. It was decided that the Unemployment

Board be asked to grant the sum of £2OO towards formation of this road to give settlers access to tidal waters.

Mr. B. Shepherd waited on the Council in reference to his neighbour sledging on the road giving access to his property which was detrimental ,to his outlet. The traffic inspector is to inspect and was given authority to deal with the matter.

Mr. Champion again waited on the Council in reference to bullock teams operating on his access road by the Lands Department, causing damage. This was left with the riding member. Mr. A. Tracey waited on the Council in regard to his contract at Paranui. This question was

left with the engineer. Mr. McCoil waited on the Council regarding the cartage of timber during the winter months and after hearing him the Council decided after due consideration to inform the Puriri Timber Company that it cannot agree to the company's request to allow carting of timber on the Mangatete roads during the winter months over the amount allowed under the Motor Vehicles Regulations. Also that the Council cannot agree to the company using any portion of the legal road for any excessive traffic until the company enter into a

bond of £SOO to repair any damage that may be done to the above roads.
