Ladies' Guild Gipsy Fair

The Kaitaia Methodist Ladies’ Guild's Gipsy Fair held last Friday, was a great success, both from the financial and social point of view, the funds of the Guild benefiting to an appreciable extent. In the afternoon and evening, veiy good business was done at the stalls, those in charge being:—Produce—Mesdames J. T. Clark, J. Hoddle, and C. Wood. Cakes—Mesdames J. Hughes and K. H. Fricker. Calendars—Mrs. J, Irvine. Sweets —Misses N. and J. Hooper and R. Miohie. Novelties —Mesdames H. Hooper, Foster and - Dr. Torrie. Christmas Tree—Mrs. D. Archibald Jar. Afternoon tea—Mesdames Williams, A. Thompson,- Misses M. Rogers, J. Tracey and A. Dawson. The winners of the competitions were : Nail driving—Mr. and Mrs. D. Archibald Jnr. Quoits —Mr. D. Archibald Jnr. Sponge cake without butter —Mrs. J. Hughes. With butter—Miss N. Hooper. Caudle-lighting—Miss G. Jameson 2. During the evening, highly entertaining items were staged. The Rev. A. Johnston added much to the entertainment, both during the evening and afternoon, and he, at the conclusion of the day, thanked all who had assisted to make the Fair suoh a success. The Kaingaroa School concert that was held last Friday evening proved a great success, and the pupils in the various items they presented, showed that they had been well trained, and in all, the audience was treated to a well rendered programme. High excitement reigned at the A. and P. hall on Tuesday night, not only among the juveniles, but also among the elders the occasion being the Kaitaia 1.0.0. F. lodge Christmas tree. Santa Claus and his newly acquired wife arrived with due ceremony, and the children received their presents from the gaily adorned Christmas tree, after which many and varied noises penetrated to remote distances. Jean Rutledge then presented Mrs. Santa Claus with a posy, and Bro. Buckley, on behalf of the Northern Star Lodge, handed a bouquet to Sister Rutledge, speaking of the good work she had done in connection with the function. Supper was then served to all present and the “children’s night” was over for another year. Last Friday the annual parents’ day was held at the Takahue School when the certificates and prizes won during the year were presented to the children

The annual prize giving of the Takahue Sunday School was held on Sunday when the Rev. Nicholas presented the prizes to the children.

A meeting of the congregation of the Kaitaia Presbyterian Church was held last week for the purpose of discussing means for improving the finances of the Church. It was decided, after the matter had been thoroughly discussed, to adopt the plan of direct giving as suggested by tlie Board of managers.

A feature of the weather this week lias been the extent of local heavy showers accompanied by heavy thunder. On Monday such was the severity of the rain at the head of the Takahue valley that it seemed almost to he a cloudburst.

Mr. C. Adamson of Taipa, while driving a small tractor on the Oruaiti Road, Jiad the misfortune to back into a large hole on the side of the road. The tractor capsized and was damaged, but Mr. Adamson was not hurt.
