County Roads and Roadwork
The following report on the roads in the County was presented to the last meeting of the Mangonui County Council by the Engineer, Mr. R. Ralph Torrie : Government Grants “Since last meeting of the Council I have concentrated on the preparation of proposals for Government grant expenditure. The following proposals have been sent forward : Ahipara Township Road, Braithwaite’s Road, Fisher’s Road, Fryer’s Road, Pekerau Road, Puhata Road, Roma Road, Ruaroa Road, Snelgar’s Road, Unahi Road, Wainui Road. “Field work in Paranui Road, and Edwards’ Road has been completed, and the proposals are well under way. Highways “Main Highways Construction Items this year are Johnson’s Culvert and Wells’ Comer. Proposals for Johnson’s Culvert have been forwarded for approval, and Wells’ Corner proposal is in hand. “Grader work has been kept up on Main Highways, and these are generally in excellent condition. Traffic Tallies “Traffic tallies were taken recently and these reveal that there is a great deal more traffic in the neighbourhood of Kaitaia and Awanui. Tenders “Tenders for works on Highways Maintenance and Government Grants will be advertised for next meeting, so that an early start can be made on metalling proposals. Flood Damage “Minor repair works have been carried out on various riding roads, but there is still a large amount of flood damage work required to be done.
Duncan’s road chiefly is in a bad state, and an endeavour has been made to get unemployed for this work, but it was found that the men would have to be subsidised £1 for £l, and housed, so it is doubtful whether a straightout contract would not be a better proposition.”
County Party Candidates Approved Every electorate in the Auckland Province was represented at a meeting of the executive of the Country Party, held at Auckland last Thurs-
day. After discussion of the political situation, it was decided to proceed with organising work for the next election. The following candidates for the party were approved : Bay of Islands, Mr. H. M. Rushworth, member of Parliament for that electorate ; Rotorua, Mr. D. R. Campbell ; Waikato, Mr. S. N. Ziman. It was decided to ask Mr. W. Grounds to accept nomination as the party’s candidate for Kaipara. Candidates for other electorates will be considered later.
