CHURCH DANCE AT KAITAIA

No mean assistance was given to the balancing of the Kaitaia Anglican Church budget with the proceeds of the dance held in the A. and P. hall, Kaitaia, last Thursday week. All the patrons of the fortnightly series of Church dances held throughout the winter were present, all voting the entertainment a complete success. The Rialto orchestra, comprising Messrs. Jim Stimpson (piano), H. A. Timbers (violin), and A. Carlquist (saxophone), gave of their best, being relieved by Miss F. Parker and Mr. W. Roy Langley who supplied extras. Miss D. Johnston and Mr. K. Dysart won the Monte Carlo, while the prizes donated by Mrs. Marks for the guessing competition were awarded to Mrs. Langley and Mrs. Northwood. A delectable supper was served in the course of the evening. The Church vestry desire to thank the Rialto orchestra for giving of their services free for the evening, and Mrs. Marks for donating the prizes for the competitions.

SPORTS DURING THE HOLIDAYS Followers of athletic sports have something to look forward to this Christmas, there being two sports meetings, one at Taipa and the other at Tokerau Beach. ' The Taipa Sports are to be held in Mr. C. Adamson’s paddock, on Tuesday, December 26th (Boxing Day). As in past years, events have been arranged for young and old, making the day perfect for holiday makers. Refreshment booths will be on the ground, and hot water will also be obtainable. Complete arrangements have been made for a highly successful Sports Day at Tokerau Beach on January Ist (New Year’s Day). A further incentive to intending visitors is the very locality itself, which is considered one of the prettiest bays on the coast. There are seventeen main events with several minor contests.

AWANUI MERRYMAKERS DANCE A dance which attracted a large, representative assembly was held in Evans’ hall, Awanui, last Thursday week under the organisation of the Merrymakers’ Club. The object in promoting this function was for the purpose of raising funds for the Awanui school picnic, and judging from the large attendance of dancers a fair net profit should be realised. With Mr. Sonny Anderson as M.C., and the Versatile Trio playing, with extras by Miss Viv Evans and Mr. Jack Ford, nothing was left to be desired. Winners of the competitions were as follows : Cake—Mr. M. Richards; Sucking Pig—Miss A. Hinehan; Fowl —Mr. Sonny Anderson. A fine supper finished off an evening which was already an outstanding success.

“It is my desire that at the earliest possible moment good metalled roads should be provided in the backblocks. Public Works men have been largely concentrated until recently on railway works and hydro-electric works. Now that railway construction has been practically completed and the Waitaki hydro-electric undertaking is about the only major work in hand at the present time, we will possibly have to go in for a policy of placing more men on roading work in the backblocks.” Hon. J. Bitchener; Minister of Public Works.
