PRO RATA PAYMENTS AND MORTGAGORS’ ACT.

The Hokianga County Council wrote to the Member for the district recently, enclosing a copy of a resolu tion passed by the Council, as follows : “That in view of the fact that many mortgagors are unable to make pro rata payments to mortgagees and creditors, the Mortgagors’ Act be amended to include money at call, thus bringing stock and station agents and banks within the Act. Many settlers who were quite willing to make pro rata payments find that under the present Act they had no power to do so. If the Act were amended as suggested, County Councils would also get at least a portion of their rates without recourse to the court.”

Mr. H. M. Rushworth replied that when the principal and amending Acts were before the House he had moved an amendment to embody this suggestion. The Government, however, had resisted the amendment on the ground that it could not be enforced.

The Matamata County Council has decided to approach the Piako County Council and the Thames Valley Drainage Board and also the various rabbit boards in the area with a view to discussing amalgamation.
