Abstract of Business At the Mangonui County Council meeting held in the Council Chambers, Kaitaia, last Friday, there were present Crs. W. Vickers (chairman;, J. N. Berghan, C. J. Barriball, E. Evans, F. Holder, D. Kitchen, L. J. Matthews and R. T. Wrathall. The following is an abstract of the business transacted : The special order altering boundaries of Oruru and Mangonui ridings was confirmed. On its completion by the Public Works department the Council agreed to maintain the Diggers Valley road. Cr. Barriball and the Engineer are to report on road occupied by L. Gardiner at Kaurinui. The Council resolved to adhere to its resolution re reducing contribution to Sanitary Inspector’s salary. Mr. Goodhcw is to be asked to continue as traffic inspector and collector at existing salary until annual meeting in May. An offer of £7OO is to be made to the Kaitaia Town Board for the purchase of its grader. The sum of £lO is to be spent on maintenance of Church road after March 31. When available the grader is to be put on Unahi and Kunu road. The No. 1 Highways Council is to be asked to recommend the Highways Board to have the Awanui-Kaingaroa-Mangonui road declared a main highway. No tenders were accepted for the Owhata and Clough roads contracts owing to the withdrawal of grants. Council’s consent was given to plan of eastern boundary line of allotments NBl and EBO parish of Maungataniwha ; and to the taking of land for road purposes through O.L.C. 6 and Rotoroa K.G.R. blk. X Rangaunu S.D. The matter of completing the taking and closing of roads through A. Adamson’s property at Taipa was left with the clerk to deal with after interviewing Mr. Adamson in reference to crossroads. The Council was waited on by Mr. Buckle in reference to notice served on him dispensing with his services as mechanic and bridge builder. He asked that he be put on grader work half time and if work were available as mechanic that he be given it. The Council agreed to re-employ Mr. Buckle on the new grader when it arrives if work proved satisfactory. Messrs. Foster Bros., Oruaiti, waited on the Council in reference to road access to their properties at Oruaiti. It was decided to see if a Public Works surveyor was available under the unemployment scheme to carry the work out ; and £2OO is to be i lowed Messrs. E. and C. Foster as full compensation for land taken through their properties and for fencing and bridging same. Payments to be made in annual instalments at the rate of not less than £lO. A request by H. G. Foster for a bridge over Stoney Creek could not be entertained owing to cost. Traffic Inspector’s Report In his report the Traffic Inspector stated that since last meeting he had been mainly engaged in the registration of dogs, but found it practically impossible in the majority of Maori cases to collect. He had issued 14 days’ warning to several, while others had promised to pay on the 20th of the month. The new quarter was now due for heavy traffic licenses and he hoped to have them all in by the end of the month. In two heavy traffic cases he asked leave to prosecute, as the men concerned were using the roads every day and were in constant work. The Tokerau Maori Land Board’s truck Aupouri, contrary to agreement entered into, was being used in wet weather.
