Women’s Division Farmers’ Union The ordinary monthly meeting of the W.D.F.U. was held in the Library rooms on Wednesday, 2nd December. A number of articles sent from the Blind Institute all sold readily. From 2 till 5 p.m. afternoon tea was served on the premises to many of the electors visiting Kaeo from the outlying districts. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Worthy, Clarke, Strumpel and W. H. Lane. Totara Swimming Club Commencing at 2.30, the opening day of the Totara Swimming Club was held at Totara North on Saturday aftertloon last. Mr. L. M. Lane, as Father Neptune performed the opening ceremony before a crowd of sixty people. Following is the programme of events for the afternoon : Exhibition of Crawl ■ — W. Lane ; Costume Race—M. Lane 1, Miss Peggy Lane 2; Corfu Dive—M. Lane 1; Back Race —W. Lane 1, Miss J. Lane 2 ; Best Club Diver —Jim Sanderson. A delicious afternoon tea was served (during the course of events) on the Totara North Wharf, the Club’s headquarters. After competitive swimming and diving was over, swimming was indulged in by most of those present. DEATH OF MRS. E. BERGHAN Mrs. Elizabeth Berghan, a wellknown resident in the Far North for over seventy years, died at her late residence at Ahipara on Friday last. She met with an accident some time ago, from the effects of which she never fully recovered. She was born at Grasby, Lincolnshire, on the 10th November, 1847, and was thus 84 years old. She arrived with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Frear, at Mangonui in 1858 when she was eleven years old, they settling on land at Oruaiti. In 1868 she married at Mangonui the late Mr. James Berghan and in 1870 they took over the hotel at Ahipara which they conducted for nine years, along with a general store and gum-buying business. In 1891 they removed to Kaitaia, taking over the Redan hotel, where Mrs. Berghan remained until the death of her husband in November, 1893. She then returned to Ahipara, where she conducted the store until her retirement in 1903

ORURU-PERIA WOMEN’S INSTITUTE The December meeting of the Oruru-Peria Women’s Institute was held at the residence of Mrs. J. Forsythe, and was well attended, Mrs. Jacentho presiding. The following motto was adopted for the branch : “Be proud of the district you live in, and endeavour to live that the district may be proud of you.” A Christmas novelty competition produced some dainty and inexpensive ideas, and Mrs. C. Adamson and Miss L. Adamson gave a demonstration of Tatting which was greatly appreci-

ated. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Adamson, Barriball and Forsythe. A song given by Mrs. Gribben, competitions and games brought an interesting afternoon to a close. The Whangarei A. and P. Assoiation cut out all luncheon and refreshment privileges at its recent show, with the result that a considerable amount of money was saved, i No complaints were made and no one went hungry or thirsty.
