The Young Idea
“I don’t want you to go home and tell your fathers how to farm, because there are many things that you will learn from them,” said Mr. T. J. Hamblyn, of the Department of Agriculture, addressing a party of boys from the Dargaville District High School who visited the Experimental Farm at Mangatara. “However,” he said, “by following closely the work that is done here and the system of grazing employed, you will be able to understand pasture management and may be of assistance on your fathers’ farms. You have a better opportunity of learning up-to-date methods and being young, should be able to pick them up more quickly. Later on, no doubt, many of you will have an opportunity of putting them into practice on your own accounts. At the same time,” Mr. Hamblyn said, “if you are keen and thoroughly understand what you want to explain, your parents are likely to appreciate any suggestions you may make.”
