CONGRATULATIONS IN returning Mr. H. M. Rushworth again as their member the electors of the Bay of Islands have paid themselves even a higher compliment than they have paid their member. The influences at work to unseat Mr. Rushworth were very strong—far stronger than appeared on the surface during the contest —and that these influences were defeated is something for which every true democrat will be profoundly thankful. Mr. Rushworth’s presence in the new Parliament will greatly strengthen the progressive forces there. His victory at the polls shows that the people are ready to follow real leadership, that they recognise ability and appreciate character. The next two years will test the moral fibre of the newly-elected members to the full. We wish we were as sure of all of them coming so well out of the ordeal as the member for the Bay of Islands.
