Herekino’s Night Out

A Successful Fancy Dress Ball The hall at Herekino presented a gaily-coloured scene on Friday night, „ when a fancy dress ball was held to raise funds for the purchase of a new piano. The hall itself was decked in bright streamers, and the many and varied costumes mingling in the dance made a novel and striking picture of life and colour. The honours of the most striking effect were carried off by the lady who personated a ghost very realistically and very appropriately for Hallooween. But the first prize was carried off by Miss K. Urlich, who wore with graceful dignity a striking Spanish costume, but Mrs. * Eric Bourke garbed as Night, was a very close second. Miss M. Posinkovich as a Dutch Girl, and Miss V. Powell as an Egyptian Lady were de- - servedly highly commended. For the men, Mr. S. Lunjevich, in his handsome Don Juan costume, carried off first prize, with Mr. R. Dysart, as a romantic Spanish Cavalier, as second. Of the non-prizewinners, Mr. L. Posinkovich in evening uniform, and Mr. E. Dysart, garbed as an Indian, were highly commended. Mr. R. J. Frain acted as judge. Dancing was kept up with spirit throughout the evening, Mr. H. Powell proving himself a capable M.C. The Ritz Orchestra, Miss N. Beazley and Messrs. J. Leathwick and H. Kirtlan supplied the music, with Miss M. Urlich for the extras. It was a most enjoyable gathering, and the financial result, some £l3, was considered very * satisfactory. Cook is turning out a well printed as well as a very readable * country newspaper. In announcing the fact the editor writes : “What we do want for the “Rodney and Otamatea Times” is local news ; and this is where our readers and subscribers can help us, and incidentally make the paper much more interesting for themselves. For after all the ‘Times’ belongs to the subscribers just as much as to the proprietors, in that each are equally interested in turning out a readable and saleable paper.” The “Northland Age” subscribes heartily to these sentiments as applicable to ourselves and our readers. Well, What About It? Speaking to the Hutt County Council, the newly-appointed Minister for Internal Affairs (Hon. Adam Hamilton) said ponderously : “People are now beginning to realise that the burden of the local bodies rates is perhaps greater than they had realised.” Ratepayers realised that long long ago, without any “perhaps.” Now that Ministers are also “beginning to realise,” may we hope they will do something real about it?

The abandonment of gold altogether as a basis of credit would be a forward move for the farming community, said Dr. I. W. Weston, farm economist at Lincoln College, to the • South Island Farmers’ Union Conference. If England had not gone off the gold standard New Zealand would have had to cancel some of its debts.
