A TRUE STORY OF A TAME SPARROW

At Sandhoek farm in Worcester district, South Africa, there is a tame sparrow that passes its time inside the farmhouse. It sleeps in a basket, and flies about from room to room, following the children and grown-ups, and perching on their heads or shoulders.

At meal times it hops about the table and it is not satisfied with the crumbs placed before it but hops from place to place, pecking at the bread on the plates, even going so far sometimes as to tug at the cloth that covers the bread plate!

Once three young finches were placed inside a cage with the sparrow who soon made friends and actually fed the finches in turn with crumbs. When they became too exacting he would thrust his empty beak into their gaping mouths.

When the housewife is busy sewing, the sparrow Sits on her left hand and pecks at the needle point each time it shows through the cloth.
