A BRAVE DEED
A life-saving medal has been presented to a seven-year-old girl by the Government of Baden, one of Germany’s federal states. Little Anneliese Hufnagel was playing one morning on the banks of the River Neckar just below the hill where the Heidelberg Castle rises and not far from the beautiful old bridge. Near by, another little girl, aged five, was “skipping” stones across the water. In doing so she fell from the stone steps into the river. The water was cold and rushing past rapidly. But without hesitation Anneliese, in her dainty Sunday frock, jumped after her comrade. The child had been quickly carried downstream. But Anneliese reached her and held her. Owing to the waves she could not swim back to the steps. So Anneliese swam to the steep stone embankment and dug her hand into a crack. With the other she supported the girl. Soon her cry for help was heard by a man, who drew the two children safely out of the water.
