ACCIDENT TO LESLIE MATTHEWS
Another unfortunate accident in connection with the school bus service occurred on the main Kaitaia-Awanui road when the children were returning from school on Tuesday afternoon. Leslie Matthews, the six-yearold son of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Matthews, who had only started school this quarter, had got out of Hhe school bus driven by Mr. C. Maria and started to cross the road from behind the bus. The driver, who had driven on, called out to him in warning, but evidently not hearing, the unfortunate boy ran into a car driven by Mr. Norman Foster, which knocked him unconscious. Dr. Torrie was summoned, when it was found that the boy had received very grave injuries and after receiving attention he was sent to the Mangonui hospital. There he was found to be suffering' from a fracture of the left thigh bone and a fracture 4 inches long on the left side of the skull, besides lacerated wounds on the left knee and the scalp, and abrasures on both knees, elbows and hands, and, in consequence, grave shock to the system. On Tuesday night he was thought to be in grave danger, but on Wednesday his condition had much improved though he will not be out of danger for some days.
