Oruru and Peria Women’s Institute

A meeting of the Oruru and Peria ladies was held at Mrs. F. Jacentho’s residence on Tuesday afternoon, 29th September, to listen to a very interesting and able address given by Miss Stops, Voluntary Organiser of the Women’s Institute for New Zealand, on the aims and objects of the Institute. There were present from 25 to 30 ladies who were so greatly taken with the objects that a branch was formed which was called the OruruPeria Women’s Institute. The following officers were then elected for the year : President—Mrs. F. Jacentho ; Vice-President—Mrs. Forsythe ; Secretary—Mrs. Gribben ; Treasurer ■ —Mrs. W'ood ; General Committee — Mesdames Barriball, Reg. Foster and R. Thompson. After the formation of the branch Miss Stops then got all members present to take part in com- | munity singing, which was thoroughly enjoyed. A special feature of the afternoon was a delightful display of folk dancing by members present under the able leadership of Miss Stops. Another very interesting feature was an exhibition of handcrafts done by the British Institutes which consisted of very many old and interesting crafts., Before closing the meeting Mrs. Jacentho, in a neat speech, thanked Miss Stops for coming to the Far North and giving them all a most enjoyable and interesting day. In conclusion the members rose and sang “For She is a Jolly Good Fellow,” and wished Miss Stops great success in her future organising work.
