(To the Editor)

Sir,—Kaitaia is evidently the home of Dame Rumour as it is freely circulated that I am a pawn of Mr. Archibald’s in my candidature for the Town Board. I wish to state my position and to leave it to the electors to judge. At Mr. Foster’s rooms on 28th August a meeting of buisness people was held and they asked me to stand as their representative which I consented to do; that is ■the position. lam contesting the election as an independant and am allied to no individual or party; but it Mr. Archibald or any other gentleman wish to assist my candidature I thank them. I am etc., D. W. Rutledge.

(To the Editor) HEREKINO-AWAROA ROAD. Sir, —It has been evident that some sinister counteraction has been at work to delay the urgently needed improvements on the above important route to or from the south or the north, and forming the natural connecting link between the east and west, and, judging by the telegraphed statement appearing in your issue of July 30, that the Chairman of the Main Highway Board ascribes “hold up” entirely to the Council’s failure to press the case, that constitutes a very serious indictment against the Council, “if it

cm be substantiated”. If the road had been formed through waste land, there might be some valid excuses for the delay. But it was improved land on both sides, and the improvers are heavily rated. Civis.
