At large meeting settlers Herekino yesterday resolution unanimously passed enter strongest protest against treatment meted out in connection with reconstruction Herekino—Awaroa section Highway. Decided torequest all northern members Parliament make representations Chairman Highways Board and Minister Public Works urging immediate reconsideration it was pointed out that now forty-live years since district was settled and that settlers are still practically in same position as at time they also protested strongly against procrastination which has taken place for over two years especially in view of fact that on October 16 1928 Chairman District Highways Council stated that as soon as survey completed and plans aoprovedby Highways Board steps would be taken to commence reconstruction. Various speakers complained that impassable state of Highway prevented them getting fat lambs to railway and freezing works also that mail sesvice with Hokianga was being carried on by packhorse. I deeply deplore that Act empowering Highways Board prevents matter being effectively handled on floor of House. The state of this highway has been scandalous for many years.
