A HOME COLUMN. HOUSEHOLD HINTS. Vinegar or black tea will dye silk or cotton hose or gloves a pretty biege shade. Cabbage water should be allowed to get quite cold before being pojred • down drains or sinks; it will then leave no unpleasant smell behind it as it does when poured away hot. Hard-boiled eggs should be plunged into cold water as soon as they are removed from the saucepan. This prevents a dark ring from appearing around the yolk. To remove tea-stains from woollen materials, cover with powdered fuller’s earth, dry, and leave for twenty-four hours. Then brush out and the stain will have disappeared. When making batter beat it thoroughly and allow to stand at least an hour before using. It i will be much lighter than it used I straight away. | ' j If you want to dry silk stock- \ ings quickly, stuff them with tisI sue paoer and hang them up. The paper absorbs the moisture, If an egg and a Itttle milk are used instead of water when making pastry, you will find a great improvement in the crust. Powdered starch, applied at once, will take out almost any stain from table linen. A jam jar placed in. a saucepan of water is as good as a
double saucepan for making * porridge or egg custard. If chintz covers are washed 'n rice-water instead of soap, the colours will not wash out arid ' no starch will be required. Boil 3lb. of rice in about 3 gals, of soft water, and when cool wash the chintz ; meanwhile boil a second lot of rice, strain, add half a cup of vinegar, rinse the chintz in this and iron before it is quite dry.
