SATURDAYS CRICKET.

KAITAIA LOSE TO HEREKINO. VALLEY WINS BY 79 RUNS. Playing Herekino at the Showgrounds last Saturday, Kaitaia went under on a first-innings margin of 4 runs. Needing 94 to win in the second innings, with three-quarters of an hour to plav, the home team knocked up 73 for 7. If truth must be told, Kaitaia lost the game largely through weak fielding. Winning the toss, Kaitaia sent the visitors in to bat, and the fall of Herekino’s last wicket saw a score of 98, chief scorers being T. Bowman 22 and E. Bourke 21 not out. Bowling for Kaitaia H Dunn took 4 wickets for 28. K lit. ia’s first innings produced 94' H. Dunn contributing 42, C. Werner 19 not cut and Lawson 14. i h'two last men in each re tumid ,1a good Lund figure associated with ducks. In its second innings the Herekino eleven knocked up 89 (Cochran 22, Gubb 20 and Bowman 18). Bowling, Dale took 3 for 3. In its second strike Kaitaia had only three-quarters of an hour to make 94 to win, and the call of time saw the score at 73 for 7 (Lawson 27 and and E. Panther 12). T. Bowman took 5 for 51. Herekino won on the first-innings score of 98 runs to 94. Little can be said in favour of the Kaitaia eleven’s fielding, for this department of their play probably cost them the game, particularly in the first innings. Dropped catches in particular are a cricketing crime; besides letting a team down they will take the heart out of any batsman. On the whole Herekino’s fielding was good, Gubb in particular, at point, being really outstanding. Mangonui v Victoria Valley. The above teams, both at full strength, met at the Valley, when after an eventful match the visitors were defeated by 79 runs. Winning the toss, Valley decided to make first use of the wicket, and at five minutes past ten E. White and W. Thompson faced the bowling of J. Penney and W. Wrathall. In Penney’s second over White was cleaned bowled and Edwards filled the vacancy, and the score was taken to 36 before a separation was effected. Three wickets then fell for nothing but R. Tracey, 25 not our, and D. White, 16, stopped the rot. The remaining batsmen did poorly and the innings closed for 85. Thompson played good cricket for his 30. Penney 5 for 29 : Rhodes 3 for 19 and Harrison 2 for 0 secured the wickets. Mangonui’s first innings produced only 24, of which Cavaye made 10, P. Panther getting the flattering analysis ot 6 wickets for 7 runs and E. White 4 for 16. Valley’s second attempt realised 99 runs to which E. White (19), W. Dawson (17), W. Thompson (23) and Pat and H. Panther (il each) were the principal contributors. W. Wrathall took 6 wickets for 36 runs. Mangonui’s second innings yielded 81, W. Wrathall (13), Penney (12), P. Lambly (11), R. J. Harrison (14), E. Harris (11), and Rhodes (12 not out) making double figures. E. White, 3 for 12 ; W. Thompson, 3 for II ; and S. Edwards 3 for 2, were the successful bowlers. Throughout the whole match the bowlers, backed up with keen and correct fielding, had the upper hand. Mr. H. H. Thompson, President of the M.C.C. Association and

Mr. F. Hirst, well known in cricketing circles throughout the North, were the umpires. Next Saturday Victoria Valley travel toßroadwood when a good game is certain to ensue, and Mangonui plays Herekino on the latter’s wicket, while the Valley B team expects a visit from Kaitaia B.
