Moerewa Works

Year’s Work Reviewed In his address to the shareholders of the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company recently, the chairman of directors, Mr J E Makgill, made the following reference to the company’s works at Maerewa No important capital expenditure has been made on these works, and it is being well maintained. You will see by the details of stock treated, that there was an increased killing of lambs of 8621 but a reduction of 3777 sheep. We dealt with 2542 more pigs than in the previous year and with 827 extra cattle. I am

sure the northern dairy farmers have reason to appreciate the outlet for their pigs which these works made possible and we hope this class of stock may become a more important item and warrant the provision of an up-to-date pig killing department before long. “Your directors have decided for the coming season to bring the rates for treating cattle, sheep and lambs at these works to the same rate as at Southdown, and we hope that the farmers of the northern districts will show their appreciation of this step by seeing to it that their stock for export is treated at the Moerewa works from all districts from which the cost of railage to Moerewa works is as cheap, or cheaper, than to the works near the City of Auckland. Qur aim is to develop the output of the North Auckland works with the products of the district for which these works were instituted by the farmers and at which those products can be most cheaply handled. To succeed in this fully we must have the output which is available. It is for the farmers of these districts to see that they specify that their stock must be treated at Moerewa and so help the develooment of their own districts. The dividing point between Moerewa and Southdown is, as regards railage on stock, about Paparoa, I may say that we have had the Moerewa works open for some weeks now to allow the nothern dairy farmers to slaughter their “bobby” calves, and several thousand calves have been dealt with.”
