Herd Testing The Two Classes
Some misunderstanding exists amongst those testing under the group system in regard to the two classes of cows A and B. In the past difficulty has been experienced in getting dairy farmers to test the whole of their herd. And the new innovation is brought in to ensure the testing of all cows being milked. Cows in class A are those that come in under normal conditions during the season under which the test is being made. The full charge of 5/- is made for testing these cows. Cows in class B are those that have not calved normally or will not calve at all during the testing season, but which are being milked.
No charge is made for the testing of cows in class B provided they do not produce isolbs of butterfatby the end of March. Should the cows in class B, produce isolbs of butterfat or over by the end of March, they are transferred to class A and the full rate is charged.
This method has been in operation in the Wa.kato for several seasons, and all cows in class A and B are included in the herd average. But the Herd Testing Association here will not include cows in class B in the herd average.
