“Camouflage” Mr Bell and The Minister That Deputation To Wellington More Political Trickery

Quite recently, occasion was taken by Mr C S Puckey to visit Wellington and other Southern centres on holiday bent. Curiously enough opportunity was ■ taken to visit the Parliamentary Buildings. While there Mr Beli M.P made hnnself very busy trying to impress Mr Puckey with the size of the “white bloom” , worn by the greatest political misfit that ever sat in Parliament. Mr Puckey did not represent the Drainage Committee but the Member for the District has scattered it broadcast that Mr Puck--1 ey approved of the Government’s drainage relief proposals. The Government has not given the ratepayers in the County area one iota of relief. Judging from the long and unwieldly stories that have been published by Mr Bell M.P., he must consider the ratepayers in , the County area are easily gulled if he thinks they will swallow the stupid “dope” he has endeavoured to ram down their necks. In point of fact Mr Bell M.P has , not done anything for the rate--1 payers. His suggestion that a • reclassification be made every , five, ten and fifteen years, and a , rebate in the rates for two years is poor compensation for the peo- : pie who will be taxed off their lands subsequently, to make up [ for the muddling extravagance of the Government and sundry politicians including Mr Bell M.P. With a wave of flags and braying like an ass, Mr Bell M.P has shown the people he not only has , been incapable of giving relief to the farmers, but he has attempted . to obstruct the farmers’ represen- . tative in their endeavours to secure redress for an overtaxed people. Mr Bell M.P has not and could not secure relief for the farmers when he had secured whatever relief the Government was prepared to give, for the landholders in the business portion of the town area. It is wellknown that the Bell family are the largest landholders in the Kaitaia town area. It is also wellknown that the Kaitaia town area is absolute- ' lv dependent upon the Drainage scheme for immunity from floods. Such being the case what was Mr Bell M.P doing when he permitted the Kaitaia town area to be placed in a separate Drainage area with a flat rate ot 2%d in the £ on the unimproved value of the land for drainage and maintenance purposes. Compare this with the rates that the farmers’ community will have to pay on Class A land running into about 3/- in the £. Mr Bell M.P has sobbed and wept tor the poor farmers and he has wondered with fear and dread what is going to happen to the “poor cockie” and in the next breath he sanctioned a piece of political trickery unheard of in the political annals of thiscountry. When tackled about it he tries to side-track the issue. It was ever thus but he has been found out at last. He will be judged by the electors at the proper time and when the truth of his political inconsistancy is brought home to the electors they will go to the ballot-box and it will be a case of “good-bye Bell.” We do appreciate that men farming thier land in the town area are being hit hard and they should receive consideration because of their high valuation. There are others including Mr 1 Bell M.P who are holding land !

for speculative purposes, who shuu.u ul made to pay for every fraction of benefit the Government’s drainage scheme will confer upon this land. To get back to the “Camouflage” and political trickery Mr Bell M.P has indulged in, in order to fool the people. He has published a statement that Mr Puckey had stated a Royal Commission is now not necessary. Mr Puckey made no such statement. Mr Puckey said: “If satisfactory arrangements could be made there will be no need for the petition to be handed in. The explanation is that if the Government agreed to a considerable cut in the capital cost and reclassification and agreed to the terms of the petition for a Royal Commission then the petition would not be necessary. The farmers will of course understand how eagerly the Member for the District has sought to take to himself credit for something the Drainage Committee did. One important thing this Committee has done is to get the Government to waive the rates for a period of two years. Mr Bell M.P was busy inspecting ‘potholes” in the road in the Kaingaroa District when he was asked to meet the Committee on the Drainage question. When he found the Committee was doing good work for the farmers he tried to upset all they were doing and at every turn tried to obstruct a successful outcome of their efforts. In doing so he was flouting the ratepayers who have been injured by his unjust interference.
