Farmers' Union.

General Meeting

A general meeting of the Kaitaia branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held in the Library Hall last evening. Present: Messrs E C Matthews (chairman), J C Marsh, D H Lewis, T Coulter, A H Puckey, A G Bell, Crene and G Hodgson. Messrs Carswell and Dennely (Hawkes Bay), and Carroll (Canterbury) visitors to the district were present by invitation. Apologies were received from the president, Mr A W Masters, and Messrs C S Pu ckey, T S Houston and H B Matthews for their non-attendance.

The Minister for Agriculture, writing with reference to the sale of “quack” stock medicines which was brought under his notice when in Kaitaia, stated that he had taken this matter up with responsible officers on his return to Wellington, and was able to say now that arrangements had been made for the Director of the Live Stock Division to write a series of notes on the subject for publication in the Department's journal.

The letter was received with :hanks.

Sometime Hon Vernon H Reed communicated with the branch on tne subject ot a visit to the North by a veterinary officer to lecture on subjects connected with' the treatment of stock. A letter was received subsequently fron: Mr T A Blake M.R. C.V.S. offering to come North and deal with any subject desired by the farmers.

Mr Blake in a further communication stated that the “Farm School” would be visiting Kaitaia at the beginning ot August, but if the branch though-there was any need for him to come up before then he could do so at any timejsuitable to the branch.

The farmers should have most cows dry now, and could manage to spare a little time for an interview or at some demonstration of interest which might be arranged. If the Union’s wishes were made known to him he would endeavour to carry out some work of interest. Seeing that the Farm School would visit Kaitaia itself and Oruru they might think it advisable to do something for thefarmer in some small place. .

It was decided to ask Mr Blake to visit the district.
