The Northland Age. Publisheď Twice a Week. Wednesdays and Fridays. Price Twopence. OFFICIAL ORGAN OF THE FARMERS’ UNION. FRIDAY, MARCH 16 NATIVE LANDS CONSOLIDATION
The Commission appointed to solve the question of consolidating the Native Land titles and of arranging for embarking the Natives on a career of farming, will not have a very easy task. They may reach that stage where the ownership of lands wdl be defined and the Natives established as farmers. It will be from this stage onward that troubles will arise and we believe these will indeed be many.' The money that the stocking of holdings will cost will be considerable and if the Native farmers are not inclined to be energetic then we may expect to find that the result of the farming experiment is insufficient to meet interest on the capital involved. What then will be the position? Will the Government foreclose and sell up the land and everything on it, or will it just wipe off the amount and start over again. No definite pronouncement has yet been made on this phase of the question, but it will be interesting to learn the intention of the Government in this matter.
