CONSTRUCTION GRANTS ON MAIN HIGHWAYS
The net appropriation of £600,• o*o for the construction, reconstruction, and improvement of main highways throughout New Zealand is proposed in the Publip Works estimates for the current provincial year. Last year the rate was £550,000, and £549,648 was expended. As was the case last year, there are many free grants, but the majority of votes to the districts under the jurisdiction of Main Highways Boards are to be given as subsidies, mostly on the basis of £1 for £l, although in some instances the subvention ranges from £2 to £5 for £l. The proposed appropriations for the roads north of Whangarei, together with the amount expended of last year’s vote, are as follows Voted Spent £ £ Whangarei-Kawakawa 6616 Mangatapere-Kaikohe 9143 7569 Mangamuka-Te Karae 3500 4992 Waimamaku-Ohaeawais233 3157 Kohukohu-Te Karae 2141 2819 Kaikohe-Omapere 500 Broadwood-Kaitaia 1526 Kawakawa-Mangam-uka ... ... 8498 5598 Whangaroa-Okaihau 2094 282
