Lively Exchanges

Officials And Motor Hire

Some Straight Speaking

At Racing Club Meeting

Vlotion For Rcfmnd Lapsed

Some lively exchanges were hea'd at the annual meeting of the Waipapakauri Racing Club last week, when Mr H Tracey challenged the right of the Committeemen to have their car hire paid by the Club on the occasion of their a ..ndance at the Club’s Meeting held at Whangarei. In addition to the report on another page, Mr Tracey made it plain that he was opposed to this procedure as the following will show: Mr Tracey : There has been too much"motor hire and joy riding. The days cf rustling from one pocket into the other arc gone. Mr Shugar : Mr Tracey has no right to interentially suggest that there has been anything of the ‘from one pocket into the other.’ I have not had any of the Club’s money neither has any member of the. Committee. It is a most improper suggestion to make, and he must be more careful as to the language he uses. I got nothing out of my expenses, and I will not allow Mr Tracey or anyone else — not even the Archangel Gabnel were he to come down and sayso —to make such an allegation against myself ar any member of the Committee. Mr Tracey must be more moderate in his choice of expressions. It is untrue to suggest as he has that the Club funds were used to pay the expenses of the Committee on a jey riding expedition. 1 admit that £25 looks a lot ot money for the trip I made to Auckland, but I have explained that, and it could not be avoided ia the circumstances.

Mr Tracey : I did not mean to suggest that Mr Shugar had used the Club funds, but I object to the car hire being paid for the officials. They had no right to do so. Mr Houston : We had every right. We went there as officials, We had to be there. Mr Paton: I object to the car hire being paid, and I want to know if this is to be done in future whpn we race away. It is net a fair thing for the officials to take their fare out of the Club funds.

Mr Fleming! It seems to me that the previous speakers are adopting this attitude, simply because they don’t understand the position. We have dipped into our own pockets time and again, to help the Club when it has required funds in the past, whereas members have only paid their annual 'ubscriution. Let us work for the good.of.the club and not create dissenttpn by listening to the man on. the street corner. There are plenty of people who com:: alone and criticise but they are not so ready to jiat their han's in tbeii ; ockets and assist the dub.

Mr. Pearson : That item certainly does not look well on the balance sheet and the officials usually go to pick a winner. Mr, Tracey : It was an exhorbitant charge. I could have got them a car for £2 a head. Mr. Houston: What kind of car ?

Mr. Tracey: A Willy’s Knight. Can you beat it ? Mr. Houston ; One car would pot have carried all the officials. Mr. Tracov : Pietty near all. Mr. Houston ; Who is it ? Mr, Tracey ; Malcolm Wal-

lace ? Mr. Houston : He is not a recognised service man. We would want some guarantee that would get there. If you knew that these cheap fares were offering -why didn’t you let us know. A ‘man wno would get up and quibble like that, I am sorry to see a raera’lVr of this Club. Mr. Tracey: That kind of thing makes people lose confidence in the Committee. Where were ail

the people from the north when we held our races. On charitable aid. (Laughter) Mr. Tracey movedr That the Executive Committee with' the exception of the President and Secretary refund to the Club the £4 10/- per head paid for their motor conveyance to Whangarei and back. There was no seconder and the motion lapsed.
