A PETROL TAX.

(To the Editor) Sir,—l was very much amused over the remarks of some of the Kaitaia ratepayers on the question of imposing a petrol tax for the purpose of a contribution towards our roads. As one who uses motor vehicles I am of the opinion that a petrol tax is always preferable to a tyre tax. For instance tyres are as has been stated, the connection between the road and the car, and consequently an owner is always in danger of having his tyres cut to pieces on some of our roads. Naturally then the owner has to meet a tyre tax and in addition he has to replace his damaged tyres with new ones. This imposes a double tax, whereas there would be no such risk with a petrol tax. If a petrol tax were imposed it would mean that people would have to pay on a basis of the petrol consumed and the “Road Hog” who races along and tears up and damages our roads will be the largest contributor for any damage done. I am etc. R V Garton.
