Strange to say when the veal export industry for calves was instituted, it was found that the railage on calves was a third more than that on pigs plus an additional 7% per cent. Strong representations on the matter were made to the railway department, and the third extra was abolished but the lYi per cent extra still obtains. Those who conduct the industry are naturally asking the why and wherefore of this differentiation. A bonus of £2OOO for the successful manufacture of briquettes or marketable fuel from bituminous, sub bitumious or browncoal slack for commercial purposes is offered by the Government. It is stipulated that the briquettes shall be manufactured in New Zealand, and that the plant owned by the claimant ' shall be capable of producing not less than 150 tons a week. There are also certain conditions as to the cost of marketing.
