BELL BROS.’ SUB-DIVISION.

(To the Editor) Sir,—ln recent issues of the AGE, "Ratepayer" end L. Peace have discussed the expending of Beil Bros.’ bond money, the Editor also adding his quota. Well, Sir, wouldn’t it have been a better proposition from a ratepayer’s point of view, if the money had to be expended, to have spent it on the completion of one road (or a portion of same) instead of forming several mud roads. Of course it wouldn’t have opened up|go many sections, but surely the mud road running to the swapsp is a sufficient example of what happens when a road is left uncompleted here,. This road is well nigh impass- ' able for vehicular traffic, and the 6tench that arises from it now, and it will be worse as the weather gets warmer, is a menace to the community. As the. Inspector of Health visits Kaijtaia shortly, it is somebody’s duty to see that thin road is brought under his notice. I am, etc., D. McLean. P.S.—The reason of my entering this, controversy is that.my attention was drawn to it through being asked by Mr. J. T. B. Taaffe if I was the person who wrote the letter signed "Ratepayer.”

(To the. Editor) Sir,—ln your the “Age”" of August 19th. I read a letter, -signed “Awapui.” After reading 4hia I am of thw opinion the writer is ready for.the half-way houae if not already , there. His letter is something like a, Chinese pussle. How can yon, aave ti per ton by patronising the ‘‘Coronation" when, the N*S.S . Go. freights are. only £l per ton genera\%rgo *nd 10/- on manure? I notice he holds, no brief for the "Coronation” but it is quite evident he dots for the Pairy Co, '

and a lot of storekeepers who are in the swim. He is evidently at loggef-heads with the storekeeper not twenty miles from Awanui, but right in Awanui. What is the reason ? Was his credit stopped or did this awful'person refuse to give him tiok ? I am etc. One Awanui Storekeeper

(To the Editor) Sir—Will you kindly give me space in your paper to correct the statement made by Mr W H Evans, re Mr E McDougall. The vehicle that caused his accident was not bogged as stated by Mr Evans, it was Steed and Wagen•er’s little lorry that had broken down on the cut going round the sandhills, about a mile, or a little more this side of Mclntosh’s place, and there was ample room and to spare for a buggy and two horses that I was driving to get past. I am also pretty sure that Mr Evans has made a mistake in saying that' Mr McDougall lay unconcious for four or five hours, as I met Constable Thornell in his sulky on the road, and I hardly think he is the man to let anyone lay op the road wljo was in need of help. I also met Freddy Evans and he was talking to Mr McDougall. I was speaking to Mr McDougall, and he told me that hp was on hi? way to Houhora when his horse threw him hurting his back, and stunning him. I asked him if I could do anything to help him as I di<J not like to leave him there but he said no, that there was a lorry' eoming behind and they would pick him up, so I came on my way. I met Jack Ford at the Lemon Tree and told him and he said he would stay and do what he could ior him untji the lorry came along {met the lorry further along and old them. Now Mr Editor that was not more than an hour and a hglf from when I met Constable Thornell, and I am pretty sur* that it would not take the lorry half an hour to reach Mr McDougall from where I met it. I am not much at letter writing, but I would like the public to get a cor-

rect report of the Case and not a false one. Mr Evans should tfiake sure of his facts another time he* fore sending them to print. The road to Houhora is in a very bad state and could do with a lot of repairing and at once. Yours etc,,

Florence Smith, Awanui,
