THE MOST LAWLESS PEOPLE. GREAT MORAL LETAn Economic Waste —Prisons Filled With Criminals. (Mf. Maxim is the well-known American Inventor.) 3lu£>£oit Jft axim t LANOING P O. JCVSCV NEW JERSEY, July Ist, 1925. ANOTHER OPEN LETTER TO THE ELECTORS OP NEW ZEALAND. During all of the 140 years after the birth of this Republic, and until a few years ago, the American people greatly prospered, and constantly improved in education, temperance, morality, and also became more and more law-abiding. Then something suddenly happened to change the law-abiding American people into the most lawless people in the world. Something happened which las in a few years increased the number of criminally insane, and the 'lumber of drug-addicts more than ten-fold, and filled our prisons with law breakers till the doors bulge. It is a curious circumstance that this great ethical, universal and moral let-down began with the beginning of Federal Prohibition. The evidence against prohibition is overwhelming. Any man would be hung for murder on a tithe of the evidence of guilt that we are able to fix on prohibition for the wave of crime, intemperance and misdemeanour which is sweeping the country, filling our prisons with criminals and our almshouses and asylums with paupers, alcoholic inebriates and maniacs. Boys and girls who would never have been intoxicated in their lives except for prohibition, are now commonly drunk. Highway robbery and murders on County roads and bandits, hold-ups and killings on the streets and in the stores and homes of our large cities have become so c- mmon that the police yawn from sheer monotony of them. Economically speaking the. Volstead Act is an economical waste. The Volstead Act has thrown away a thousand million dollars of revenue annually and steeped America with evil and the worst forms of crime and criminality. Yours faithfully,
