FAIRBURN.

(Own Correspondent). A very pleasant little function took place at the Fairburn School on Wednesday afternoon, f2th. inst., when the school children took the opportunity of making a presentation to the headmaster, Mr. H. Skiffington, prior to hi* departure from the district. Despite the bad weather, quite a number of the parents cam* along forth* occasion. Master Stanley Coulter made a very capable chairman and a very nice little programme was presented. The principal item was a speech by Master Stuart Buckingham when he’ presented Mr. Skiffington, on behalf of the school children, with a silver-mounted inkstand. Mr. Skiffington suitably acknowledged the gift. After a few mote items the whole school joined it. singing “’For he’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Afternoon tea was then handed round by the ladies and after bidding Mr. Skiffington goodbye all braved the elements on their homeward journey.

Great credit is due to Miss Munro, the assistant teacher, who was responsible for the whole arrangements. She, however, modestly kept in the background and threw the responsibility on the children, who are to he congratulated on the creditable way in which they carried out their various duties in connection with the function. BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT. A basketball tournament took placeon Saturday lastwhenteams representing Victoria Valley, Fairburn, Oruru, and Takahue met on the Victoria Valley ground. The results were as follows: — Fairburn defeated Oruru 9—B Victoria Valley defeated Takahue g—0 Fairburn defeated Takahue 20—2 Victoria Valley drew with Oruru 6—6 Oruru defeated Takahue 6—4 Victoria Valley defeated Fairburn ll—9. Victoria Valley thus won the competition the positions of the respectr, e teams being as follows: —Victoria 5 points, Fairburn 4 points Oruru 3 points and Takahue 0 points. Messrs Harrison and Skiffington refereed the games. A football match between the Victoria Valley and Peria was played on the Valley ground on the same day and resulted in a win for Peria B—6.8 —6.
