The debate in Parliament over the position of the country’s finances will not make anyone ticher or poorer. The general public will be left little the wiser in the long run, and in any case will be satisfied that it is merely a politician’s quarrel, and a case if “six of one and half a dozen of the othe;” with Ihe ! est.of the argument perhaps v.’i.h the Reform Party. For the average mm, it is a hopeless business trying to understand the public accounts. He knows that government grows more and mor» expensive with little to show for it, and he listens placidly to one party accusing th 2 otht r of absolute extravagance and total disregard of the nil s > f economy, care and wisdom in public expenditure. It is a kind of pot and kettle argument, for all parties in power throw money about. In the end, too, they are alike in that they have little to show for it in the way of reproductive works and revenue producing industries.
