Mr. John Latta, who was on the testing staff of the Kaitaia Dairy Co for some time, left on Tuesday for Rua .vai where he takes up a similar position. The late Mrs. Alison Simpson, who died at Whangarei on the 22nd inst., at the advanced age of 92 years, was one of the pioneers of that town, she having settled there in 1863. Both she and her husband, the late Mr. W. Simpson, were natives of Fifeshire, Scotland, and came to New Zealand in the vessel Scimitar, in 1863. She will be remembered in Whangarei for her kindly good nature and for her many acts of kindness. The funeral took place at Whangarei on the 23rd inst. and was largely attended. The pall bearers were six of the old lady’s grandsons. Kaitaia residents will extend their sympathy to Mrs. McKinnon in the loss of her mother. Mr. A. M. Hester, the retiring manager of the Christchurch Press Co, was recently presented by the staff with a purse containing a very substantial sum with which to purchase something tangible as a reminder of his 37 years service, and the esteem in which he was held by his fellow workers.

The late Mrs. Marara Povey, who died at Peria on the Bth inst., was 67 years of age and a very old resident of the Northland. She was a daughter of Mrs Murray, of Pukepoto, and with her husband, Mr. H. Povey, left Parenga 35 years ago for the Peria district where she resided continuously till her death. Besides her husband, she is survived by a family of eight children, thirty four grand-children and one great grand-child. One son, John, was killed in the Great War. Grace, the six-year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs, H. Parker, is in the Mangonui Hospital suffering from an injured knee. She is prog'ersing favourably after a slight operation. Tom Wallace, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Wallace, Fairburn, was operated on at the Mangonui Hospital last week for a poisoned leg. Passengers to Mangonui by the Clansman last evening were Misses Coulter, A. Manuel, Newman, J. Dodd, Mesdames Bullen, and Baker, Messrs Richardson, Stacy, F. Andrews, Foss, W. Campbell’ C.T. Young, Muir, Malcay, Morey, Prosser, Pettit, Sherman, Heteraka and Pau te Pau. .Passengers booked for to-night’s trip to Auckland include Mrs. S. A. Thompson, Mrs. Perkinson, Mrs. H-W. Jones, and 3 children, Messrs Burnie, Prosser, F. Andrews and Geo Hill.

Mr. H. J. Sweeny the Country Party candidate for the Bay of Islands electorate in the forthcoming election, is attending the Dominion Farmers Union Conference at Wellington with Messrs Roberts and Robinson, the delegates from the district. Mr. D.E. Stacey, of Messrs J.M. McVeagh Ltd., Auckland, is in Kaitaia on business in connection with the Matakana Radiata Ltd. plantations He is staying at the Kaitaia Hotel. He is accsnspanyied bv Mr. W.A.N. Campbell, Inward passengers by the Daphne to Awanui on Monday were Messrs Donnovaa, Petrie, Painting, Clifton, Harvey, Mesdames Painting, and T. Smith. Outward passengers to Auckland on Taesday were, Messrs J. Urlich, Mclvor, J. Latta B. Brott, Miss B. Latimer, and Miss L. Evans. Mr. Jas Jacobs has been admitted to the Mangonui Hospital suffering from an injured knee.
