JUNIOR TOURNEY AT KAITAIA HONOURS TO KAITAIA Fine weather conditions prevailed for the seven.a-sids junior Rugby tourney at Sunray Park yesterday. Seven teams competed and some interesting bouts were witnessed. Meeting in the final Kaitaia and Waipapakauri oontested the issue to a finish, Kaitaia winning by 6 to nil. Each player in the winning team received a cap. KAITAIA A v. KAITAIA B Kaitaia A defeated Kaitaia B by 3 to nil. C. Taaffe scored for the winners. AWANUI v. TAKAHUE This was a good game. The ball was kicked behind the Takahue line and Hutley had a clear run to score. Not converted. During a bit of hard play in Takahue’s quarter Smith forced his way ever the line and scored. Not converted. The game ended, Awanui 6; Takahue nil. WAIPAPAKAURI v. ORURU Waipapakauri started a good passing movement and the ball was sent to S. Switzer who scored. It was not converted Oruru attacked and Hobson scored after some good play by Oruru. It was not converted. Waipap. kept up a strong attack and Oruru forced, this ended the game in favour of Waipap. 2nd Round KAITAIA B v. TAKAHUE B Takahue were given a free-kick in Kaitaia’s 25, and they were successful in kicking a goal. The score remained Takahue 3 ; Kaitaia nil. ORURU v TAKAHUE A. A fast run by J. Rider resulted in a try for Takahue. A good kick by D. Berghan added the extra points. Takahue kept up the offensive and N. Simun picked up the ball in Oruru’s 25 and scored. KAITAIA A v TAKAHUE B Shortly alter commencing play the ball was kicked behind Takahue’s line, and Taaffe, putting in a fast run beat a Takahue man for the ball and scored. Not converted. For Kaitaia Stuart Matthews scored two tries and Don Whitefield one. The Kaitaia team was: S. Matthews, D. Whitefield, J. Puckey, G Bell, B. Bell, C. Puckey, D. Gallagher, T. Berghan, E. Jameson, P. Kelsall, J. Renata, D. Marsh, D. Martin, W. Povey, E. Wilkinson. Mr. E. Mitchell was referee. There were no matches in the Mangonui Union competition on Saturday last. The matches set down for that date will be _ played on June 13th and will complete the first round in the senior competition. The senior seven-a-side tournament will be held on Sunray Park on Saturday next and should prove very interesting. The first round starts at 1 p.m. sharp.
