KAITAIA TOWN BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING The above Board met last evening. Present: J. B. Reynolds (chairman), F. H. S. Matthews, J. H. Bedgood, Geo. Rickard and the clerk, D. R. Wood. Art apology was read from J . T. B. Taaffe who is in hospital. The committee set up reported having met the Council committee re adjustment of town and country affairs, and no agreement being arrived at it was decided to recommend both bodies to apply for a Comission to make adjustments. This course will be taken.

A letter was received from the Chamber of Commerce asking the Borrd’s co-operation in the deputation to wait on the Minister of Lands in connection with the swamp drainage rate. J. B. Reynolds and F. H, S. Matthews will represent the Board, who unanimously decided to co operate with other bodies.

The Board endorsed the action ot the district’s rep. on tire Highways Board (Mr. A. H. Long) in moving a resolution at the recent conference at Whangarei that it be a recommendation of the No. 1 Group Highways Council that the Act be so amended as to empower the Main Highways Board to contribute up to £ for £ for maintenance upon main highways.

It is expected that the sanitary service will be put into operation this month.

The possibility of obtaining a water and electrical supply from the Okaihu falls was discussed, the chairman stating that a Government engineer would be in the district shortly when he would be asked to investigate.

As soon as levels are taken the footpath from the corner opposite the County Chambers to the factory bridge is to be formed. In connection with the kerbing and channelling and footpath work in Commerce St. the chairman said the Board had power to compel property owners fronting same to pay half cost of such improvements. in fairness to all the ratepayers he thought the Board should enforce this law.

Mr. Matthews thought the footpaths should be done at the same time. He felt sure property owners concerned would willingly contribute. The estimated cost of the present work in hand is £440.

It was decided that an estimate be obtained from the engineer for the work of forming and tarring the footpaths for stretches coinciding with those involved in the present contract for kerbing and channelling and that the property owners fronting the stretches so involved be notified that the Board intend under the Town Board’s Act, to charge them with half the cost of kerbing and channelling and asphalting the footpath. The treasurer's statement showed a credit balance of £640 at March 31. This will carry a Government subsidy of about £IOO.
