POWER ALCOHOL.
Should the process to procure power alcoi.ol from prickly pear now being tested in Queensland, prove a commercial proposition, it will be of enormous economic value to Australia and New Zealand, A successful, cheap substitute for petrol locally produced would be a great boon. The weakness of the present condition is that we are absolutely dependent upon other countries for the power to keep our motor transporteffective. Circumstances may arise when this would be an appaling handicap. Furthermore, at present the money tor every drop of petrol used goes out ot the country, restricting local circulation. This operates against country districts as compared with the old days of horse vehicles, although no doubt there have been compensating benefits. Local production of power alcohol would cheapen transport and promote greater produciion. If the product is to come from prickly pear —hitherto an alarming and extensive pest —it would be a double boon. Such a development, seems too good to be true and further details will be watched with keen interest.
