WHITE PINE FOR EXPORT

Interviewed recently, Mr. H. Valder, manager of Messrs Ellis and Burnand, Ltd., timber merchants, of Hamilton, informed a N. A. Times representative that the importation of Swedish butter boxes had not affected their business lo any great extent. The demand lor kahikatea tor the Sydney butter-box trade was so keen that his company can export, at a price showing a greater margin of profit, all the kahikatea they can cut. In Australia the use of Swedish timber for butter boxes had been discontinued owing to unsatisfactory results. American hem-' lock had also been found unsatisfactory, with the consequence that New Zealand white pine was in stronger demand than ever, being admittedly the very finest timber in the world for the purpose, being devoid oi gum or smell and holding the nails much better than any other timber. Whether New Zealand will reach the same conclusion as had been reached in

Australia remains to be seen, this being the first year New Zealand factories have gone out of New Zealand for Ihcir supplies.

Mr. Valder is of the opinion that if the dairy companies can make a substantial saving by buying elsewhere, they were quite entitled to do so. With a keen demand in Australia, his company were getting relatively more for the timber f.o.b. Auckland than they were getting for the boxes made up.

As showing the keenness of competition in shipping to obtain a freight to New Zealand, Swedish boxes can be landed in Auckland on a cheaper freight rate than the railway freight from the Waikato.
