Peter the Pious, in “The Hokianga Star” says: “I was talking to a man from down Ashburton way the other day and he said the people in his district were very curious about the Hokianga people. "You are the first people” he said “that we have ever heard of that didn’t want a railway.” It would seem therefore that we are not so little known in the South as is generally supposed. Our member, Col. Bell has made us famous throughout the land as “the people who don’t want a railway.” As enviable a reputation as the English town of Darlington made for itself when t refused to be linked up with the first railway laid down in England.”
