FAIRBURN NEWS.

(Own Correspondent) The Ess and Ess Co. had a full house at Fairburn on the 3rd inst. when they staged an entertainment vhich was very much appreciated by the audience. Two of our local residents met with accidents at Perkinson’s sawmill, at Victoria Valley, last week. Mr Clem Gardner, while working the breakdown had one of his hands badly crushed. A plank on which Mr Harry Christensen was standing gave way, and he fell a considerable distance to the bottom of the mill, and got badly bruised. I am pleased to hear that both suffereis are making satisfactory progress.

Mr A. A. Switzer is now shifting, his mill from Fairburn to Mangatoitoi, to cut a quantity of timber for Mr H. H. Thompson.

The Oruru-Fairburn Dairy Company have just completed the sale of their November-December output at the satisfactory price of 1/7 per lb.

Mr H. D. Foster has harvested a very firm crop of oats. Grown on light hilly land, and manured with superphosphate, the result proves (he value of this splendid manure.

Messrs J. Dawson and Claude Switzer are busy ploughing fern country on their Mangatoitoi properties, and Mr R. B. Coulter is busy on his Fairburn property.

While discing is claimed to be a successful method of breaking in fern country in the Waikato, and the light hill country around ICaitaia, experiments have proved that it is not so successful on the better class of bush country in this district. Crushing with stock is also only a temporary measure ; ploughing appears to be the only effective remedy.

Six new subscribers have just been linked up on the Kaiaka private telephone system, and two more are waiting to come

A fine new bungalow is nearing completion in Kaiaka for Mr Alf Christensen. I am sorry to have to record the death of Mr Povey, senr., of Peria, which took place on the 6th inst. While out riding a couple of days earlier Mr Povey was thrown from his horse, and received injuries which proved fatal. The funeral took place at Pukepoto on the 7th. Deceased, who was an old and respected resident of the district, leaves a wife and grownup family to mourn their loss; we extend our deepest sympathy in their sad bereavement.
