The secret of success in gumland is thorough preparation of the soil. Deep cultivation is necessary, followed by drainage if necessary, fallowing and liming. The spil must be worked up to a tilth with a somewhat cloddy surface rather than leaving it too fine on top. The failure to farm gumlands successfully in the past has been due to faulty methods of cultivation. It has also been well demonstrated that pastures cannot be satisfactorily maintained without regular top-dressings with some kind of phosphatic manure.
