A week ago one of our correspondents had a letter on the straying cattle nuisance, and we can endorse everything he sajd. Only a few months ago there was an accident at Fairburn.s, caused by straying cattle. Thy driver of a motor car, in attempting td avoid several cattle on the road, ran over the bank, and car and driver were pinned under a willow tree. That the driver not killed was something little short of a miracle. As it was hi was injured, and the car was practically wrecked. At a recent County Council meeting Cr. Kitchen, himself a car and lorry owner, spoke strongly on the matter. In the old days when all vehicles were horss- - straying animals were not such a danger as now. But nowadays when everyone signalises his prosperity by the purchase of a motor car the position is quite different. These vehicles travel at great speeds, and on our winding roads no prophet is required to tell what would happen a car rounding a turn at even moderate speed if it met several straying horses or cattle. A few days ago a gentleman driving a car from Kaitaia to Mangonui passed on that stretch fifty-three cattle beasts and twenty horses straying on the road. lhe menace of straying animals is a serious one, and action should be taken ere it is too late. Surely we shall not have to wait

for an accident, with loss of valuable lives, ere action of some is taken. The County Council has discussed the matter, but discussion has been the extent of their action. A ranger should be appointed for the whole county, who would impound, without fear or favour, every animal found straying. We draw the Council’s attention to this matter, and feel assured that if action were taken owners would find that it did not pay to use “ the long paddock.”
