For Wednesday night the principal picture is a dramatisation of Robert W. Chambers’ great book ‘The Fighting Chance’ the picture bearing the same name. The principal parts are taken by Ann Q. Nilsson, Conrad Nagel and Mrs. Wallace Reid. Readers of the book will remember that the hero and heroine are hereditary addicts to the drink habit, and the book and the picture hinge around their heroic efforts, under theinfluence of love, to overcome their ingrained craving. They have only a “fighting chance” to win through, but they succeed. The attempts to discredit them both, and to ruin them are finely depicted. There are really two stories running in the picture —that of Sylvia and Stephen, and Plank and Mrs. Mortimer. The picture is splendidly produced, and is a fine representation of life amongst New York society people. The programme is completed by “ Ladies First,” a Sennett Comedy, and 14th episode of “The Moonriders.” “Prairie Trails,” Saturday’s big feature is a Tom Mix picture. It is another of those cases, so hard for us to understand, of antagonism of sheep and cattle men. There is usual villain, who tries to make Tex (Tom Mix) the scapecoat for his own misdeeds. There
is even more than -the usual amount of Mix thrills in the picture. Tex holds off a crowd with revolvers and beer bottles, and then escapes to his horse through thp beer chute. He rescues a married woman and is accused of kidnapping her, leaps into a canoe with his girl (whose mind has been poisoned against him), is captured, bound and gagged, and escapes by rolling down an embankment. Later on he leaps through the roof of a cabin, and scatters the outlaws. He then disposes of the rest of the gang by ambushing them fitom a tree. A thrill! best describes the picture. The rest of the night is filled by “ The Big Secret ” (a Sunshine Comedy), “Factory to Consumer ” (a Cartoon) and two Topicals.
